NSW BIG RED KIDNEY BUS NOW ON TOUR
Member for Cootamundra Katrina Hodgkinson is pleased the state’s first mobile dialysis service has been launched, and will be travelling to NSW holiday destinations to provide patients living with kidney failure the chance to have a break without the worry of missing life-saving treatment.
This announcement comes 14 months after Katrina relayed to Parliament the story of Mr Gary Foster of Young and his experience of the Big Red Kidney Bus in Victoria.
Mr Foster’s wife and son, who both have chronic kidney disease, had been able to take a holiday while using the services of the Big Red Kidney Bus in Victoria.
Speaking in Parliament at the time, Katrina said it would be fantastic if NSW also had a Big Red Kidney Bus which travelled around the state, providing haemodialysis patients and their carers the opportunity to visit holiday destinations in NSW.

Earlier this month an event was held at Royal North Shore Hospital to officially launch the Big Red Kidney Bus tour, delivering dialysis treatment to patients as it travels to popular holiday spots across the NSW.
A partnership between Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) and Kidney Health Australia means the state-of-the art unit, fitted with three dialysis chairs, will provide about 1,500 dialysis treatments a year when at full capacity. The bus will complement the state-wide service currently delivered through RNSH’s Sydney Dialysis Centre.
The NSW Government has provided more than $382,000 for up to 250 patients a year to receive dialysis on the Big Red Kidney Bus.
The bus will stop for six weeks in Umina (15 May-24 June), Nelson Bay (3 July-1 August), Coffs Harbour (21 August-30 September) and Ballina (9 October-18 November).
“We are very pleased that this service has been made available so that patients who rely on dialysis in NSW can escape for a much-needed break,” said Katrina.
“I encourage dialysis patients and their families to take advantage of this opportunity to plan a holiday or to visit friends and family.”
Bookings can be made be made by contacting Kidney Health Australia firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 1800 454 363.
